PROGRAMMING RADIOS

Well folks I received my Puxing-777 465-520Mhz UHF Radio thismorning.

As expected I've had to program the PRS channels manually, which has been surprisingly easy. As it turns out these Puxings have three selectable functions. Many of you will know this, but for the uninitiated...
Frequency Mode - which means you can dial up any frequency you like between 465Mhz and 520Mhz
Channel Mode - which means you can only use the programmed channels.
Self - this is the self-programming mode which you use to enter/edit the 40 PRS channels and the respective frequencies.

The self-programming comprised of easy to follow prompts, you select a channel number 1-128. you enter the receive frequency you want on that channel then the transmit frequency (Rx & Tx are the same freq.) there are a few other selectable I/O options - very straight forward - once that channel has been completed it prompts you to start on the next. Once you've finished programming you turn the unit off then on again. To switch between Frequency and Channels you simply turn it off then turn it back on while holding down the [enter] key.
The user manual makes use of clear easily followed flow-charts, which more than makes up for the "Chinese-english"

When it is in Channel Mode you can only access the channels you have programmed. In this case 40.
To test that I'd entered everything correctly I pulled out my 0.5W Uniden walkie-talkies and tested each of the 40 channels. perfect.

One noticeable thing is that my Uniden PRS walkies pick up taxis etc but the Puxing PRS does not (at this time). I'm guessing that is irrelevant so long as communication between the Puxing and the Uniden is fine, which it is.

Now the big test will be if it works in the field.

If you are looking to import your own Puxing radio be sure that it is one that covers the PRS frequencies.
The PRS frequencies range from 476.425Mhz to 477.400Mhz, so the Puxing 465-520Mhz is perfect.
 
Programming your brand new personally imported Puxing-777 Radio.
All of what I have covered below is available in the User Manual.
Here I outline a basic set-up - programming the PRS channels for use in Airsoft.

Turn on the Radio. The display will either show something like "CH-001" or "476.425"
"CH-001" shows that it is in Channel Mode
"476.425" shows that it is in Frequency Mode

To switch between Channel Mode and Frequency Mode - turn it off then turn it on again while holding down the [ENTER] key, repeat to switch back. For PRS use you want to be in Channel Mode.

To enter the Self-Program Mode, turn the radio off and turn it on again while holding down the [MONITOR] and [MENU] keys. The display should now read "SELF". (the 'monitor' key is the key immediately below the PTT button)
 
You are now in the Self-Program Mode.
The display should read "SELF"
Press [ENTER] the display will now read "CH-001".
Press [ENTER]
now the display will be blank "_ _ _ _ _ _"
use the keypad to enter the Receiving Frequency for PRS channel-1: 476.425 (same as the Transmitting Freq)
the display should now read "476.425"
Press [ENTER]
Press [*LOCK] key to cycle through the options [67.0], [D023N] or [OFF] - select [OFF]
Press [ENTER]
now the display will be blank "_ _ _ _ _ _"
use the keypad to enter the Transmitting Frequency for PRS channel-1: 476.425 (same as the Receiving Freq)
the display should now read "476.425"
Press [ENTER]
Press [*LOCK] key to cycle through the options [67.0], [D023N] or [OFF] - select [OFF]
Press [ENTER]
use the [ENCODER] dial to cycle through the options [1], [2] or [OFF] - select [OFF] (the [encoder] dial is next to the antenna)
Press [ENTER]
use the [ENCODER] dial to cycle through the options [DEL] or [ADD] - select [ADD]
Press [ENTER]
use the [ENCODER] dial to cycle through the options [L] or [H] - select [H]
Press [ENTER]
use the [ENCODER] dial to cycle through the options [WIDE] or [NARROW] - select [WIDE]
Press [ENTER]
the display will now read "0 _ _ _ _ _"
use the [ENCODER] to name the channel, cycle the flashing digit to [1]
the display will now read "1 _ _ _ _ _"
Press [ENTER] you have completed programming channel-1
the display will now read "CH-002"
Press [ENTER]
now the display will be blank  "_ _ _ _ _ _"
 
repeat this process for channel-2, the only difference is the input frequency will be 476.450   
You will find a complete list of the PRS channel numbers and frequencies below.

When you come to naming double digit channels.
use the [ENCODER] to name the channel, cycle the flashing digit to [1]
the display will read "1 _ _ _ _ _"
Press the [#T-R] key, this moves you onto the next digit, cycle the flashing digit to [zero]
the display will now read "1 0 _ _ _ _"
Press [ENTER]
the display will now read "CH-011" if you have just finished programming channel-10.

Once you have finished programming, turn the radio off then on again. If you are in Channel Mode you will now be able to use the [ENCODER] dial to cycle through the 40 PRS channels.

Now for a little bit of laymans info on some of those complex options where we selected [OFF]

"Press [*LOCK] key to cycle through the options [67.0], [D023N] or [OFF] - select [OFF]"
[67.0] and [D023N] are different types of carrier tone, which can be used effectively when everyone is using the same channel.
Say one day at H2 everyone is using channel-24, so it gets very crowded and you're hearing lotsa of info that is irrelevant to you or your team. If your team was then to edit their channel-18 and select the [67.0] option. then their radios will filter out irrelevant noise and only allow incoming info from team members who have selected the same carrier tone [67.0] or whatever value they choose there are 50 codes to choose from ranging from 67.0 to 254.3 and you use the [ENCODER] to change the value. others can still here your broadcasts but now you are only hearing your team.
It is unlikely that a channel would be so busy that anyone would need to use this feature.

this is the Busy Channel Lockout option. the default is [OFF]. how exactly this works I'm currently unsure.

this option adds or deletes the channels in the Priority Scan list. doesn't effect how we use the radio. [ADD] is the default.
in Channel Mode there are a couple of scan features, one scans every channel for activity, or Priority Scan which only scans the channels in the list for activity.

"use the [ENCODER] dial to cycle through the options [L] or [H] - select [H]"
this is where you get to select the output power level, either Low: 2Watts or Hi: 4Watts
for smaller fields 2Watts might be ok, but for larger fields (like H2) I've heard people saying 4Watts is ideal.

this option selects the channel spacing, either [NARROW] @ 12.5Khz or [WIDE] @ 25Khz. how exactly this impacts the use of the radio I am unsure. I've operated at both Hi and Lo communicating with my Uniden walkie talkies without noticing any difference.

After hearing rumours, then doing a bit of research... rumours are true.
This one specifically:
Personal Radio Service can use up to  80 channels.

puxings are all good but no good for people with retail unidens/motorolas etc. its pretty much all or nothing, no point until everyone has it

I know. I heard the rumour from you. Then I found out myself a week or so ago.

Uniden's/motorola's should be able to be reprogrammed somehow. They got set up for PRS 40ch once upon a time...
They will have to find out themselves, or just stick with the first 40.

But it shouldnt mean others who want it but cant have it because someone else is using a different brand.

It does mean Im going to have 40 more channels than them.
